Remote employee
A remote employee is a person on a company's payroll who works from home or another location instead of an office. They have the same employment status, benefits, and obligations as office staff. The term covers domestic remote staff and, through an employer of record, employees in other countries.

What it means in practice
Remote work changes where people sit, not what they cost. A domestic remote employee still carries full local salary, payroll taxes, and benefits. The cost advantage in remote hiring comes from widening the search to markets with lower costs of living, not from remote work itself.
Managing remote staff well comes down to clear expectations, written SOPs, regular check-ins, and measurable KPIs. Those habits matter more than any monitoring tool.
